Words matter and have meaning
Dr. Jessica Metcalfe is an award-winning international speaker, a best-selling author and a practising dentist, recognized as one of Canada’s Most Powerful Women in 2023.
Her story
She started in dentistry at 13 as a sterilization technician and went on to work nearly every role a dental office has, from receptionist and office manager to dental assistant, before earning her dental degree from Boston University in 2015. A hospital residency with medically compromised and special needs patients led to five years at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in Toronto as staff dentist and education director. Along the way she was a semi-professional piano player, owned a rock ’n’ roll music school and managed a territory for Nestlé Canada. Those very different teams gave her a first-hand understanding of very different leadership styles.
Her passion for leadership and high-performing teams began in high school. It took a turn at university, when she lost her cousin to suicide related to bullying. That loss started her commitment to helping others communicate and listen, and to understanding how workplace interactions and expectations reach into personal lives.
At the cancer centre she launched her speaking career, lecturing on quality of life for cancer patients. That work grew to include the well-being of healthcare professionals, and then the wider questions of 21st-century work: emotional intelligence, impostor syndrome, perfectionism, burnout and the generations now working side by side.
Today she co-owns two dental clinics, practises one to two days a week and speaks internationally. Her newest work, HerMouth Philosophy, looks at how hormonal change through pregnancy, menopause and beyond shows up in the mouth.

Confidence grows from learning from mistakes, not just from collecting successes.
Communication isn’t just about the words. It includes your tone, your volume, your posture and your gestures.
Culture starts with leadership, not with HR.
How she works
Her mission is to help leaders, entrepreneurs and professionals build thriving workplaces through better communication, emotional intelligence and inclusive cultures.
Progress over perfection
There is no such thing as perfection, but you can strive for excellence. Decide that you can trust yourself and put the work out there.
Candour with kindness
It is one thing to be brutally honest and hurt someone. It takes a leader to be truthful with kindness.
Be you
To be your authentic self you have to be vulnerable, be weird and use your voice even when it is hard.
Curiosity
Being open-minded is a skill that can be learned. Keep an open mind and you find skills you did not know you had.
Collaboration
Open the door and hold it for the person coming in behind you. Collaboration means more ideas, more action and more support.
Alchemy
A seemingly magical process of transformation. This is where the magic and the science of humans helping humans come together.

Speak Kindly, You’re Listening
“As a high achiever myself, I put impossible expectations on myself, developing impostor syndrome trying to be the perfectionist I thought I needed to be. It was only a matter of time until I burnt out and had to face my darkest times.”
Her first book is a guide for leaders and high achievers to understand what their inner voice is saying, so it doesn’t keep them stuck. A second book, Speak Kindly, They’re Listening, is in the works.
